Welcome to our guide on understanding the key differences between acute care beds, home care beds, and long-term care beds to help you determine the best option for your needs. Whether your loved one is in need of hospital care, support at home, or long-term care in a facility, understanding these differences is vital.
The most common type of hospital beds are used primarily in private residences or assisted living facilities. Their aesthetics are intended to blend into a residential bedroom environment with a faux wood grain finish. Both full electric and semi electric options allow their user to adjust the sleep surface with a remote control.
Full electric hospital beds allows the user to adjust the head rest, leg rest, and elevation of the bed off of the ground electronically. Semi electric beds adjust the head and foot rest electronically while the elevation is adjusted with a manual lever.
At The Hospital Bed Store we typically recommend full electric hospital beds for individuals recovering from surgery as the user may want to adjust the height of the bed regularly to make the transition into or out of bed easier. We also recommend it for users with any incontinence issues as caregivers will typically look to raise the height of the bed to change underpads or work with the person laying in the bed.
Whether you are renting a hospital bed or buying one, a semi electric bed is one of the more economical options and may be the right fit for your loved one. In scenarios where the user ambulates normally and does not experience any incontinence issues, a semi electric bed can provide the functionality of an adjustable hospital bed that is not regularly going to be raised and lowered.
In the world of medical equipment "bariatric" refers to the device's ability to support patients that weigh over 350 lbs.
Most medical beds are 36" wide by 80" long however there are a few exceptions. For taller patients a 4" bed extender can be added to increase the length to 84" long, also bariatric beds can be up to 48" wide.
Long term care beds are the most basic type of bed utilized by rehabilitation or skilled nursing facilities and are occasionally found in residences or assisted living facilities. Their functions typically include the ability to lean the bed towards the head or foot (Trendelenberg/Reverse Trendelenberg), along with adjusting the head, foot and elevation. These beds are robustly constructed and feature an enhanced braking system.
Long term care beds are best suited for use in facilities as they are constructed to be wheeled around while a patient is occupying the bed and offer additional automatic functionality conducive to specific medical uses.
As with most medical beds, the typical dimensions are 36" wide by 80" long, however many can expand up to 48" wide by 88" long. Long term care beds also have a wider range of elevations, when compared to homecare beds, and can go as low as 7 inches and as high as 30 inches.
An acute care hospital bed is a type of medical bed used for patients who require short-term, intensive treatment due to serious illness, injury, or surgery. These beds are typically found in hospitals and are equipped to support patients with complex medical conditions that need close monitoring, frequent medical interventions, and immediate care.
